Disability Organization Joint Front of Sri Lanka organized a
workshop to educate people with disabilities about human rights of people with disabilities
and to discuss the new government laws that affect them. As the umbrella organization for the Disabled Persons Organization (DPOs)
in Sri Lanka, DOJF provides a great support for us in national level policy and
advocacy matters. The workshop was held at “Help Age Head Office” in Wijerama,
starting from 9.30a.m to 4.00p.m.
Education, health, transport, employment and Sports of people with
disabilities were some main areas discussed in the workshop. The benefits of inclusion
over special education and need of social inclusion for students with
disabilities were also main topics discussed in the workshop. Many personal experiences were shared among
participators about above areas. The United Nation Disability Rights were also
discussed with the history that builds up the current situation. Adding the
nature of the disability to the proposed electronic national identity card was
one of the main suggestions made by participators. There was an open invitation
by DOJF leaders to all educated young personalities to join with DOJF to win
disability rights for our community.
